TONIGHT at 6.30pm — The Par­ish of Christ Church St Laurence (812 George St, Hay­mar­ket) extends an invit­a­tion to a Fest­iv­al Even­song.

This ser­vice will com­mem­or­ate Oxford Move­ment Sunday, giv­ing thanks for the litur­gic­al tra­di­tion with­in Anglic­an­ism.

The guest preach­er will be Asso­ci­ate Pro­fess­or Michael Hors­burgh AM of St James’ King Street.

The ser­vice will be fol­lowed by light refresh­ments.  No RSVP required.

Tues­day Night Bible Study – is on a short break for two weeks

Dur­ing the break we have agreed to read the Book of Ruth which we will dis­cuss on our first week back.

Bible Study will resume on Tues­day 28^th July at 7.30pm

Next Sunday 26^th July — Talk on Demen­tia. The bible read­ings for next Sunday include Romans 8:26–39.  Fr Mark will use this oppor­tun­ity to speak about faith and demen­tia, draw­ing on some of the ideas in his book, Com­ing to Christ in Demen­tia.

Sat­urday, 8 August 2026 at 2.30pm — Cinema Para­diso:

Pier Paolo Pasolini: The Gos­pel accord­ing to St Mat­thew (Il van­gelo secondo Mat­teo) (1964)

The note in the Pew Sheet on East­er Day (5 April 2026) about the show­ing of this film at the St James Insti­tute and the Bible Study’s read­ing of Matthew’s Gos­pel inspired Cinema Para­diso to present this mas­ter­piece of Itali­an cinema.

As heard on the Fourth Sunday after Pente­cost (21 June 2026), Mat­thew recor­ded some of Christ’s aston­ish­ing state­ments, some of which are known as the beatitudes.

Hailed by crit­ics as Pasolini’s greatest work, the film is a stun­ning inter­pret­a­tion of the life of Christ, who is por­trayed as a peas­ant out­cast, driv­en by anger at social injustice.

The per­form­ances are by an entirely ama­teur cast found on very evoc­at­ive loc­a­tion in Sicily.

In 2018, Cinema Paradiso’s first film was Rossellini’s The Flowers of St Fran­cis which we all enjoyed. This film will not dis­ap­point.

Sunday 18^th Octo­ber – St Luke’s Patron­al Fest­iv­al

On Sunday 18th Octo­ber at our 9.30am ser­vice we will be cel­eb­rat­ing our St Luke’s Patron­al Fest­iv­al with a spe­cial guest preach­er and former rect­or, The Very Rev’d Steph­en Wil­li­ams, Dean Emer­it­us of Christ­ch­urch Cathed­ral New­castle and known to a few long-stand­ing parish­ion­ers.

Steph­en and his wife Sue will join us for lunch after the ser­vice — this will either be a shared lunch or a pub lunch — yet to be con­firmed.
