Series at St James’ King Street called “Progress and Purpose”
Variety of dates and topics.
The Future of Welfare: 6:30pm–8pm, Thursday 29th October, St James’ King Street and online.
Christian theology was built into the original concept of the welfare state by William Temple, wartime Archbishop of Canterbury. Today the welfare state is at once in crisis and ripe for radical renewal – how might theology contribute meaningfully to conversations about human struggling and human flourishing?
Science and Religion: 12:30–2pm, Friday 30th October, St James’ Crypt.
There are many myths to dispel about the relationship between these two great enterprises, sometimes close and sometimes fraught. Both are, in the end, deeply interested in defining and describing the human condition. Nick Spencer is Senior Fellow at Theos Think Tank, London, host of the podcast Reading our Times, and author of books on welfare, science, and other subjects.

The Revd John Bunyan has a very limited number (30) of his latest book, Around The Broad Land: Prayers and Readings for the Circling Year. John has paid for the printing.
These books, are numbered and signed, and are available for donations of at least $100 to send via ABM to the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem.
The money is for Al-Alhi Hospital, founded by CMS in 1882, and the only Christian hospital in Gaza, with no income from nor connection with the Hamas authorities. Details of this small but very important hospital are on the diocesan website. Even our small gifts will give encouragement to those who care for young and old, sick, wounded, traumatised, or dying, in very difficult circumstances, and show that our Church in the “Holy Land” is not forgotten.

The Commissioning of The Rev’d Jack Monaghan as our new rector is Monday 30th November at 7 pm.
The Bishop has charged the Wardens with the responsibility of preparing the service for him in conjunction with Fr Jack and the Acting Rector; and sending out invitations to Fr Jack’s family, local dignitaries, clergy in the local fraternity, the Local Mission Leader and Anglican clergy within the South Sydney Region.
Of course, we hope as many of our parishioners as possible will be able to attend and help in preparing and serving supper to our many guests.
The Wardens will supply champagne and orange juice, tea and coffee.
Help would be appreciated early on Monday afternoon to make sandwiches and to set up the hall. If that’s not possible for you, perhaps you would make a cake or a slice or contribute some sushi or a platter of cheese and or fruit and savoury biscuits.
Some people won’t have had dinner so our supper will be appreciated, and we recall from 2019 at the last Induction, there wasn’t much left over and the wine ran out!! [So many clergy, but none could turn water into wine!]
In addition, on Saturday 28th November from 9.30am we will have a working bee to clean up the church, the hall and the grounds. It would be great if we had some people come that are younger than 75 to help with this work, to make everything ship-shape! Please put the date in your diaries now.
Many thanks,
Andrew, Ruth and Tiffany
